Let’s get started

The Scoop

The Azolla plant, which is an invasive non-native species, has been dominating parts of the Llangloffan Fen National Nature Reserve and Cleddau River. The Azolla plant grows quickly and the floating aquatic fern spreads across the surface of standing water, blocking out light. This reduces oxygen and kills aquatic flora, leading to the death of fish and invertebrates. However, the Azolla Weevil is coming to the rescue!

The weevil was released in June 2024 and is already having a positive impact on the Azolla plant. In fact, within 8 weeks most of the Azolla had been eaten by the weevil, which is totally reliant on the plant to survive.

If you were one of the people to miss out on the northern lights in Pembrokeshire earlier this year, you had another chance last week! The aurora borealis was back on show on the night of October 10th and it was spectacular.

If you missed it (again!) local photographers were out in force and captured amazing images of the northern lights across the county. The photo above, taken by Nick Cleary, shows the north breakwater in Fishguard harbour. You can view some of the photos by clicking the blue heading of this section.

Micky Beckett from Solva participated in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games for Team GB in the men's dinghy class. Having returned from the games, Beckett made the fantastic gesture of raffling the ILCA 7 dinghy he used in the Olympics. Beckett received a fantastic response and raised a total of £18,053 for the Andrew Simpson Foundation.

Set up in memory of British Olympian Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, the charity provides opportunities for young people to experience sailing from several centres in the UK.
