The Scoop

Residents of Fishguard may have noticed a new arrival to the port this week as the Stena Adventurer has been rerouted from the Dublin to Holyhead route. Having seen a ferry leaving Fishguard port and heading in a different direction to the usual ferry to Rosslare, it was time to investigate. Unfortunately, Holyhead Port is closed due to storm damage until at least the 15th of January and Fishguard Port has stepped in to help.

In addition to freight, the Fishguard to Dublin route is also open to motorists and foot passengers, providing a rare opportunity for people in Pembrokeshire to travel directly by ferry to the Irish capital.

Following Storm Darragh, many homes across Pembrokeshire have been experiencing flickering electricity and unusual sounds. Some residents have also seen sparks on the powerlines. The reason for this is a build up of salt on the power lines following the storm.

As the salt burns off the power lines it causes a reaction and that leads to the sparks on the lines and the interruption to electricity in homes. This is known as “corona discharge” and you can find out more about that using this link and clicking on ‘Noise from lines’.
