The Scoop

School pupils from across the county have been working hard to create GIFs of popular places in Pembrokeshire. A total of 47 schools were involved in the project and had a fantastic time. The digital illustration workshops were hosted by Mwydro, a Digital Illustration business based in Caernarfon. The Pembrokeshire GIFs will be available to over 7 billion people worldwide.

The Welsh GIFs for place names and attractions across Pembrokeshire can be used on many social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. So, when you are visiting a place in Pembrokeshire, you can add the GIFs to your social media posts and they look brilliant!

Please be aware, it may take up to 10 business days for the GIFs to appear in the GIF search box on social media platforms. They might not be available at the time of publication.

Barafundle Bay has been named as the cleanest beach in the UK following a study by Litterbins.co.uk. Several metrics were used when compiling the results, including average bacteria levels, cleanliness scores, Google star ratings, and the percentage of excellent reviews on TripAdvisor. Good news for those planning on visiting the beach this summer (We will have some nice, beach-going weather…I’m sure…)

With low average bacteria levels of just 10 cfu/100ml, a cleanliness score of 78 out of 100, 4.9 out of 5 Google star rating, and 86% excellent reviews on TripAdvisor, it is easy to see why Barafundle Bay topped the list. There were four other Welsh beaches in the top ten, and you can see the full list in the table below.

It may not be for everyone (I would definitely do it…honest😆) but for Sue Christopher of Wild Swim Wales, spending a day off swimming with wild sharks was like a dream come true. 30 miles off the Pembrokeshire coast, Sue spent a day this week swimming with blue sharks that were close enough to touch.

Blue sharks are known to visit UK seas during the summer months and like to feed mostly on squid and small fish. Speaking about the experience, Sue said, “It was a magical day, one that I won't ever forget with the sharks close enough to touch on more than one occasion and stayed with us all day.”

A proposal has been made this week to give Pembrokeshire’s firefighters a council tax discount. Newport and Dinas county councillor, Cllr Huw Murphy, submitted a Notice of Motion for on-call firefighters to enjoy a reduction in council tax. The motion will be considered by the council’s Cabinet at a later date.

Speaking about the motion, Cllr Murphy said, “In recognition of the vital work performed by our on-call fire fighters (retained not full time employees of the service) and to encourage others to consider undertaking this vital role within our communities this Notice of Motion proposes that Pembrokeshire County Council offers every retained fire-fighter working and living in Pembrokeshire a 10 per cent reduction in the council tax they pay after achieving a qualifying period of service annually, to be determined by the Chief Fire Officer.”
