The Scoop

Jodie Grinham, originally from Haverfordwest, won gold in the mixed team compound final at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris. Paired with Nathan Macqueen, the duo beat Iran 155-151 to claim the gold medal, including a perfect score of 40 in the final end.

Grinham went one better than the silver medal she won in the same event in 2016 at the Rio games. It means she has won two medals at the 2024 Paralympics following a bronze in the individual compound event. Grinham achieved her two medals in Paris while pregnant and it is believed she is the first openly pregnant woman to win a Paralympic medal. It seems the baby behaved and didn’t kick during the crucial moments!

If you were out and about last Friday (27th August) you may have seen and heard members of the annual Carbage Run on the roads of Pembrokeshire. If you saw a brightly decorated car drive by with horns, sirens, and lights, you may have been confused at the time but it was a member of the 2024 Carbage Run.

The Carbage Run is a 5-day road trip through Europe in a car that is at least 15 years old and not worth more than 500 Euros. The adventure is more about having fun attempting to complete crazy assignments than speed and the drivers certainly seemed to be enjoying themselves as they gathered at Carew Airfield.

When the news emerged that Bethlehem Chapel in Newport was going to be put up for auction, it was met with dismay by local residents. Negotiations for a private purchase agreement failed and there was a risk the chapel could be purchased by a private owner, which would take it out of community use.

However, the local community worked together and the Canolfan Bethlehem Community Project placed the winning bid of £145,000. It took only 14 days for the community to raise the funds to win the auction and the chapel will be transformed into a Heritage, Arts, and Cultural Centre for Newport.
