The Scoop

A ‘mysterious ghost boat’ was found drifting off the coast of Pembrokeshire this week. The boat was eight miles off the Pembrokeshire coast and was initially spotted by the Stena Nordica ferry which travels between Fishguard and Rosslare. A Fishguard lifeboat was launched to locate the boat and confirmed there was no-one onboard.

Fisherman, Matt Lewis and his crew proceeded to the last known position of the boat and it was safely towed in to Fishguard Harbour. Matt said: "Not the usual morning fishing. Myself, Vince Gyseman, Iwan Davies and Jack Wallace located and towed in a ghost boat drifting.”

Having completed some detective work on Facebook, Matt discovered the boat was being towed from Plymouth to Ireland before it became loose. So, it is fair to say, this was no Mary Celeste!

Not for the first time, Haverfordwest Yarn Bombers have been working their magic on the town of Haverfordwest. The group, coordinated by Sally Williams, have knitted several stunning designs based on the theme of farming. The yarn bombs include horses, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits, bees, and tractors.

There are 30 women in the group between the ages of 34 and 94 who meet regularly at The Albany Hall. If you are interested, you can even buy one of the designs but you must be quick, because some have already sold. Why not head to Haverfordwest and check out the designs for yourself because they look even better in person. If there is one that takes your fancy, you can call Sally on 07979 497450 and buy it.

‘Go Compare!’ - You can already hear the sound of the voice and Wynne Evans, the Go Compare man, was spotted in Tenby this week. Evans, a talented singer and broadcaster, was in Tenby this week with Joanna Page, star of Gavin and Stacey, filming for their new show.

The famous duo were filming for a new BBC television show ‘Lost at Sea’. Travelling around the country on a motor yacht, the pair aim to discover new and unusual places to dine. Wynne, who was crowned the winner of 2023 Celebrity MasterChef, will also be cooking delicious dishes onboard the yacht. Sounds like a tasty gig if you can get it!

The potential for a huge Roman fort has been discovered in a field in Pembrokeshire. Dr Mark Merrony, a leading Roman specialist, often wondered if a straight road on which he travelled in Pembrokeshire was in fact Roman. Dr Merrony, a tutor at Oxford University, looked at satellite pictures and saw a field that had the dimensions to be a Roman fort.

Having visited the field, Dr Merrony said, “Sticking out of the ground was a triangular piece that looked like a Roman roofing slate. I thought: ‘Surely not?’ I pulled it up and lo and behold, it’s an archetypal Roman roofing slate, an absolute peach. Flip it upside down and you can see underneath a diagonal line where it was grooved to fit into the one that was underneath it. It’s a real beauty.”

The discovery suggests there was no peace between the Romans and the Celtic Demetae tribe that inhabited this area of Wales. The fort is thought to date from the first to the third centuries and has generated huge excitement among archaeologists, especially due to the size, which roughly measures 185 by 155 metres. There is potential for the site to be declared a scheduled monument but for the time being, the location is being kept a secret. We will have to wait a bit longer for the chance to check out the discovery for ourselves.
