Let’s get started

The Scoop

The residents of Cwm Gwaun, near Fishguard, will be celebrating New Year on the 13th of January this year. No, the community did not postpone celebrations from the 31st of December, they will be celebrating Hen Galan. The reason for this is the residents of Cwm Gwaun still observe the dates of the Julian Calendar. The Julian calendar was abolished in 1752 and replaced with the Gregorian calendar but people in the Gwaun Valley refused to accept the change.

(Children door to door singing in 1961 - Geoff Charles/National Library of Wales)

Two of the traditions of Hen Galan see children go singing from door to door and the locals parade a horse’s head on a pole. The horses head was once a real horses skull but has changed in recent times to a wooden effigy.

Comrade Tambo's London Recruits is a film created by Pembrokeshire director Gordon Main. The documentary film is about freedom fighters assisting underground anti-apartheid efforts in South Africa in the late 1960’s and 70’s. The story shows how ANC (African National Congress ) deployed young volunteers from the UK on risky, undercover propaganda missions in South Africa, using archive footage and reconstruction.

Some of the scenes used in the film were filmed in Roch and Haverfordwest, including HaverHub before it was refurbished. There were eleven different sets in HaverHub, which was once an Art Deco post office. London Recruits won awards at the Joburg Film Festival South Africa, Simon Sabela Awards, and International London Pan African Film Festival. The Pembrokeshire premiere is at Haverfordwest’s Palace Cinema on Thursday, January 16th at 7:30pm.
