The Scoop

Pembrokeshire Show takes place this week on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th August at Haverfordwest Showground. This is the biggest agricultural show in the county and there is so much to look forward to this week! Discounted tickets can be purchased from the website until midnight on Tuesday 13th August.

In addition to the sheep, cattle, equine, crops, poultry, and show jumping schedule, you will find horticulture and cookery, crafts and photography, food story events, rugby skills sessions, youngsters football, carriage exhibition, land train, food hall, bar, coffee stalls, and ice cream. There really is something for everyone.

Do you know what makes a winning plate of three different colour eggs?! This is just one of the many awards that will be handed out over the two days!

Following a landslide in November 2023 and January 2024, the coastal path between Wisemans Bridge and Coppet Hall was closed. Known as the Tramway, this section of coastal path suffered from substantial rock falls that made the path unsafe for walkers. Thankfully, there was good news this week as the path reopened to the public on the 8th August.

There are cliffs and tunnels along this section of the coastal path that had to be stabilised before the path could reopen. The path is important to residents, visitors, and businesses so it is great to see the work complete so everyone can use the path again safely.

Plans have been submitted to redevelop Cawdor Barracks in Pembrokeshire as a Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC) site. The Pembrokeshire site is set to be one of a network of ground-based radars in Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The radars provide 360° global space monitoring to detect, track, identify and characterise objects up to 36,000km into space.

The transformation of the Cawdor Barracks will keep the site open and will require the permanent presence of up to 100 personnel. Currently home to 14 Signal Regiment and having previously been a Royal Navy base and a Royal Air Force flying station, the MOD will host two public information events about the site in September.

The first will take place on the 13th September at Solva Memorial Hall and the second on the 14th September at St David’s City Hall. With concerns regarding the negative impact on Pembrokeshire’s National Park and the potential increase in traffic along the coast road, you can attend these events and air your views.

It is not every day you find a seal in your dinghy….unless you are Pembrokeshire Islands Boat Trips! Maximus the seal has become a regular visitor and, at the end of every day, he can be found in his favourite yellow dinghy. He is no stranger to the company and Maximus has been seen in the waters around Neyland for over a decade.

"He's got a little bit too used to us now, so it's a daily occurrence," said the company's Gareth Reynolds.

A spray with the hose pipe used to be enough to move Maximus from the boat but being such as regular, he has started to enjoy it.

"We're very thankful for Maximus... we love him really, he's part of our team," said Gareth.
