The Scoop

Lost Atlantic rainforest in Pembrokeshire will be restored by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales (WTSWW). As part of a long-term partnership with Aviva, plans are to improve habitats and recreate temperate rainforest at Trellwyn Fach near the Pembrokeshire coast.

The recovery programme is supported by a £38 million donation from Aviva and there will be plenty of opportunity for the local community to get involved.

Speaking to the The Pembrokeshire Herald, Chief Executive at WTSWW, Sarah Kessell said, “We’re delighted this rainforest restoration project at Trellwyn Fach can get started. This site is ideally situated in the Gwaun valley, already connected to Celtic rainforest remnants and giving us the opportunity to buffer and extend this amazing habitat as well as improving access for the local community. These are exciting times!”

Sian Phillips has been crowned Mrs Galaxy Pembrokeshire and will participate in the finals of Mrs Galaxy UK. The 41 year old from Pembroke Dock was motivated to enter the competition following the unexpected death of her brother earlier this year. Speaking about her drive to enter Mrs Galaxy Pembrokeshire, Sian said, “Having lost my brother unexpectedly in February, it made me realise that life is too short and to seize every opportunity that came my way.”

Having previously organised a charity fashion show and a boudoir photo shoot and exhibition, Sian will be fundraising for charities and attending local events, both locally and internationally.

A giant leatherback turtle, measuring nearly six feet long, was saved from the rope of a sailing buoy near Tenby this week. Tenby Sailing Club race officers Peter Randles and Dewi Jackson spotted the turtle dragging the buoy out to sea on Tuesday 16th July. It is believed the turtle was looking for food and thought the buoy was a jellyfish.

Talking about the rescue, Peter said, “The turtle was dragging the buoy and we assumed the turtle had bitten through the anchor rope, so decided we needed to find a way to free the creature.”

Peter continued: “I managed to take hold of the buoy mast and could then see the turtle was not trapped, so slowly released the creature from the rope and the turtle then swam off.”

Living up to 50 years, leatherback turtles are an endangered species, and thanks to Peter and Dewi, this one survived.

Morgan Clewer-Evans from Maenclochog completed the 72-ounce steak eating challenge while on holiday in Amarillo, Texas, USA. Morgan took on the world famous 72-ounce steak challenge at the Big Texan Restaurant, which includes an enormous steak, shrimp cocktail, baked potato, salad and bread roll. To succeed, Morgan had to leave a clean plate in under an hour.

Having completed the challenge, without leaving his seat or being ill, Morgan received a t-shirt, certificate, and had the $72 cost of the steak refunded. Morgan finished off the steak on a raised stage area in front of the whole restaurant in 49 minutes of continuous eating.

“I didn’t actually feel too bad afterwards,” said Morgan. “It was fairly good clean food and I still had room for dessert.”
