The Scoop
The 2024 National Whale and Dolphin Watch took place between July 26th to August 4th and there was a rare breed of shark spotted off the Pembrokeshire coast. A Thresher Shark, which can can live for up to 50 years and grow up to 6 metres in length was seen twice, once in St Brides Bay and once offshore from Grassholm Island.

Some of the other marine life spotted in Pembrokeshire waters during the watch included Risso’s Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, Harbour Porpoise, Common Dolphins, Grey Seals, and a Fin Whale. However, the Thresher Shark stole the show and for anyone who enjoys the sea around Pembrokeshire, perhaps it is best to avoid watching ‘Jaws’ for the time being! (Thresher Sharks are not known to be aggressive towards humans)
The old radio network run on copper telephone wiring at Milford Haven Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) has been replaced by a new radio network. The Radio Network Infrastructure Replacement Programme (RNIR) started in the summer of 2020 and is set to continue across the UK over the next two years. The new system runs mostly on modern fibre cables but also line-of-sight microwave links in some areas.

The new fibre-based hybrid radio network offers several benefits for MRCC and water users including communication with ships and leisure users, automatic ship tracking identification systems, co-ordinating search and rescue, and the launch of lifeboats.
The Willow Garden, a haven of nature at Withybush Hospital, officially opened this week. Hywel Dda UHB’s Chair Dr Neil Wooding planted a hawthorn tree in the garden as part of the opening ceremony, which was attended by those who made the garden possible. Funded by a Welsh Government ‘Local Places for Nature’ grant, the garden is 2,500 square metres and open to staff, patients, and visitors.

Speaking about the new garden, Dr Wooding said, “As a health board we recognise the importance of improving the quality of the physical environments in which we work and provide care and increasing access to nature. “Improving the green spaces in and around our community and hospital sites will bring benefits to staff, patients, visitors, local communities and the natural living world.”
