The Scoop
Chris Ellery set off from Goodwick at around 2pm on Wednesday 30th October in his small black inflatable boat. Being a seasoned boater, there were no doubts he would return to his home in Bristol on Thursday. However, alarm bells were raised when Mr. Ellery missed check-ins and calls to him went unanswered. A search was quickly launched using RNLI lifeboats from several stations around the Pembrokeshire coast but he was not found.

Mr. Ellery’s boat had engine trouble and his phone lost power, leaving him at the mercy of the open sea. Fortunately, the strong currents and prevailing winds carried Mr. Ellery across to Ireland, where he arrived in County Wicklow, tired but safe. The RNLI issued a safety warning following the incredible incident and highlighted the importance of preparation for solo boat trips.
Bandit and Tahoe, two Newfoundland dogs, are trained in water rescue to help promote water safety. The dogs were on holiday with their owner and joined the Tenby Surf lifesavers as they undertook their sea training.

The dogs train with a club called ‘Newfs In Action’, which was founded in 2010 by friends who wished to have fun training their Newfoundland dogs for water rescue. Talking about the experience, owner Cheryl Ann Payne said, “They used a life ring, a torpedo buoy, brought back the surf board, and even undertook a multi tow of the whole team!”
